Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf
cavalry trooper c. 1703

Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf cavalry
trooper,
Von-Der-Osten Regiment of Horse (Imperial contingent),
c. 1703
The Regiment was in Imperial service during the War
of the Spanish
Succession and saw action on the Upper Rhine area against
the French.
Gottorf troops were allied to the Swedes, Denmarks
fiercest enemy in the
17th and 18th century. The trooper's uniform is therefore
of Swedish
("Carolus XII")-style. When Denmark occupied
Gottorf territory in 1715,
the regiment could not return but went into Swedish
service at
Stralsund.
