Socalled "frinegere" (free negros) had to
join the West Indian militia since the 1730ies. In the
beginning of the 19th century some of them filled the
ranks of a special volunteer militia corps.
The official name was Christianssteds og Frederikssteds Frikorps or simply St. Croix Frikorps, but the unit was better known to contemporaries as "Scholten's Frikorps". Officers wore green epauletts, edged silver and the red-gold scarf. A bayonet, not visible on this illustration, completed the armament.

Together with the Prindsens Liv Eskadron, these two
mounted units formed the most exclusive part of the
plantermilits (plantation militia).
