The militia of the Danish West Indies, 1829/1842

Fig. 1 (left) Private, (St. Croix) Scholten's Frikorps, 1829.
Socalled "frinegere" (free negros) had to join the West Indian militia since the 1730ies. In the beginning of the 19th century some of them filled the ranks of a special volunteer militia corps.

The official name was Christianssteds og Frederikssteds Frikorps or simply St. Croix Frikorps, but the unit was better known to contemporaries as "Scholten's Frikorps". Officers wore green epauletts, edged silver and the red-gold scarf. A bayonet, not visible on this illustration, completed the armament.

Together with the Prindsens Liv Eskadron, these two mounted units formed the most exclusive part of the plantermilits (plantation militia).
